Install Eclipse and ADT for SAP BTP Trial

For SAP BTP Trial + ABAP Environment, the usual setup is:

Eclipse → ABAP Development Tools (ADT) → SAP BTP Trial ABAP environment → ABAP Cloud Project

Already set up?

If your ABAP Cloud project opens in Eclipse and appears in Project Explorer, you can start Lesson 1 — ABAP Cloud Foundations.

Before you start

Have an SAP account ready so you can sign in to SAP BTP Trial.

If you already have access to an SAP BTP ABAP Environment instance, keep its ABAP Service URL ready. If you do not, step 5 will show you how to create a trial instance and get the URL.

1. Download Eclipse

Download and install Eclipse IDE for Java Developers:

Recent Eclipse packages normally include the required Java runtime, so you usually do not need to install Java separately.

SAP recommends using a current Eclipse version that is compatible with the latest ADT release.

2. Start Eclipse

Launch Eclipse and select a workspace folder when prompted.

For example:

text
C:\Users\<your-user>\eclipse-workspace

You can use any folder you prefer.

3. Install ABAP Development Tools (ADT)

In Eclipse, open:

text
Help → Install New Software...

In the Work with field, enter:

text
https://tools.hana.ondemand.com/latest

Press Enter.

Then:

  1. Select ABAP Development Tools.
  2. Click Next.
  3. Review the installation details and click Next again.
  4. Accept the license agreement.
  5. Click Finish.
  6. If Eclipse asks you to trust the software, select the available entries and choose Trust Selected.
  7. Restart Eclipse when prompted.

SAP documentation:

4. Open the ABAP Perspective

After Eclipse restarts, open:

text
Window → Perspective → Open Perspective → Other...

Select:

text
ABAP

This switches Eclipse to the ABAP development layout.

5. Get Access to an SAP BTP Trial ABAP Environment

You need an SAP BTP ABAP Environment instance and its ABAP Service URL before you can create the project in Eclipse.

Already have an ABAP trial instance?

Keep its ABAP Service URL ready and continue to step 6.

Need to create one?

Follow Set Up SAP BTP Trial for ABAP Development to create or reuse a trial instance and copy its ABAP Service URL. The guide will send you back here when the URL is ready.

SAP documentation:

6. Create an ABAP Cloud Project

In Eclipse, open:

text
File → New → Other... → ABAP Cloud Project

Choose the right project type

For SAP BTP ABAP Environment, choose ABAP Cloud Project, not the standard ABAP Project.

7. Connect Eclipse to SAP BTP

Enter the URL for your SAP BTP ABAP Environment.

Then:

  1. Enter the ABAP system URL.
  2. Click Open Logon Page in Browser.
  3. Sign in with your SAP BTP Trial account.
  4. Authorize the connection if prompted.
  5. Return to Eclipse.
  6. Click Finish.

SAP tutorial:

8. Verify the Connection

Your ABAP system should now appear in Eclipse under Project Explorer.

You should see entries similar to:

text
Your ABAP Cloud Project
├── Favorite Packages
└── Released Objects

If the project loads without connection errors, Eclipse and ADT are ready to use with SAP BTP.

Troubleshooting

The browser opens with the wrong SAP user

Choose Copy Logon URL to Clipboard in the ABAP Cloud Project wizard, then open the URL in a private or incognito browser window. This lets you sign in with a different SAP account from the one already active in your default browser.
