ABAP SQL, CDS & RAP
ABAP SQL, CDS & RAP is the second module in this course. Its 23 lessons take you from ABAP SQL and CDS to RAP business objects, extensibility, Clean Core, released APIs, and quality, finishing with an S/4HANA side-by-side Stock Check project. All 23 lessons and the HTTP workshop are available. Lesson 23 is the final lesson.
Lessons 8 and 9 form a two-part persistence sequence: first design and create your database table, then use ABAP SQL to create, read, update, and delete its rows safely. Complete the Travel Budget Review Manager checkpoint project before starting RAP.
Lessons 10–14 build on that persistence: model a RAP root, add managed behavior, consume the business object through EML, enforce business rules with validations, determinations, and messages, then add actions, field control, and dynamic feature control. The guided lessons use Reservations; the practice sequence applies the same concepts to Support Issues.
After Lesson 14, combine these skills in the Purchase Request Workflow Manager checkpoint project before continuing with Lesson 15 — Authorization.
Lessons 15–17 secure the business object with CDS DCL and RAP authorization, expose it through a projection layer and OData V4 UI service with value help and metadata, then add persistent draft editing in the Fiori Elements preview. Lesson 18 extends that application with a parent/child composition. Apply these layers to your Purchase Request BO in the Service-Ready Purchase Request Application checkpoint project before Lesson 19 adds business events to publish saved state changes for asynchronous consumers.
Lesson 20 demonstrates CDS and RAP extensions through a separate inspection application. Follow it with the HTTP Workshop — REST APIs with ABAP Cloud to practice HTTP requests, JSON, status codes, and authentication headers. Lesson 21 builds on the workshop with S/4HANA Product API consumption, Service Consumption Models, OData client proxies, and Clean Core. Lesson 22 uses an independent calculation exercise to introduce ABAP Unit, debugging, ATC, and more efficient SQL queries.
Lesson 23 — Final Project: S/4HANA Side-by-Side Stock Check Extension brings these concepts together in a local RAP/Fiori application on SAP BTP. Connect its Product value help to the read-only S/4HANA Product API through a CDS custom entity and OData client proxy, then improve and demonstrate the application independently. The remote portion requires the shared demo communication scenario in your Trial tenant; the lesson includes a local-work fallback when connectivity is unavailable.
Prerequisite
Complete ABAP Foundations first so you are comfortable with modern ABAP syntax, classes, methods, and object collaboration.
How to use this module
Each lesson has three parts:
- Learn — follow the guided explanation and implementation.
- Practice — apply the lesson independently to a related scenario.
- Companion — review deeper explanations, reference implementations, and troubleshooting guidance.
Follow that order before continuing to the next lesson.
Lessons
All 23 lessons and the workshop link to the available material. Take the HTTP workshop after Lesson 20 and before Lesson 21. Finish the module with the guided final project and independent improvements in Lesson 23.
Put the pieces together
After Lesson 5, you have the OOP, ABAP SQL, CDS expression, join, and association skills needed for the Travel Booking Inspector. You can complete it at that checkpoint or continue through semantics, aggregation, custom persistence modeling, and safe SQL writes before returning to the project.
Start Project 1 — Travel Booking Inspector →
After Lesson 9, complete the Travel Budget Review Manager checkpoint project. It combines custom persistence, CDS modeling and aggregation, and safe SQL writes in one application before moving on to RAP.
Start Project 2 — Travel Budget Review Manager →
Once you finish the checkpoint, continue with Lesson 10 — RAP Foundations.
After Lesson 14, complete the Purchase Request Workflow Manager checkpoint project. Build a managed RAP business object and prove its workflow, validations, actions, and dynamic feature control through EML.
Start Project 3 — Purchase Request Workflow Manager →
Once you finish the checkpoint, continue with Lesson 15 — Authorization, then work through the service layer, draft editing, and compositions in Lessons 16–18.
After Lesson 18, complete the Service-Ready Purchase Request Application checkpoint project. Extend Project 3 with ownership, authorization, draft, Review Notes, and an OData V4 UI service. Verify the same business rules through Fiori Elements and EML.
Start Project 4 — Service-Ready Purchase Request Application →
Once you finish the checkpoint, continue with Lesson 19 — RAP Business Events.
Practice for certification
After completing the module and projects, test your skills with the C_ABAPD 2601-style practice exam. Prepare your BTP trial system first, allow three hours for the development tasks, then use the separate worked solutions to review your implementation.
